Learning Journey: A Path That Shows the Next Step

Cerner · Lead Product Design Strategist
Cerner Learning Journey dashboard for the Hospitalist Implementation Journey. A Journey Path row shows stages 1 and 2 complete in green, stage 3 current in blue, and stages 4 through 12 locked. Below, a Stage 3 step list on the left shows two completed videos, and a Stage 3 Overview on the right shows a 69 percent progress ring, a 39 minute duration, topics, and a foundational skill level.
  1. Three states: complete, current, locked. Steps are enumerated, so the learner always knows which one is theirs.
  2. Content is split into small units, so each can be finished in one sitting and earns a check.

The learner’s view of a Learning Journey: a gated path of numbered stages across the top, with the current stage’s steps and progress below. Finished stages are green, the current one is blue, and later ones stay locked, so the next step is the one asking for attention. The screen uses existing Cerner design system components instead of new ones, a deliberate choice that kept it familiar and cut engineering risk when schedule margin was thin.

I built the final visuals and directed the engineers on the build. I consulted them through design, so each choice was one we knew we could deliver.
